Poll: Will You Use Meta Keywords Knowing Bing Uses It & Google Doesn't?

A WebmasterWorld thread points to a comment by Bing's Senior Product Manager, Duane Forrester, who said just like Yahoo in the past, Bing does use the meta keywords tag for ranking purposes.

Duane made sure to explain that it won't make a huge difference in rankings. Duane said:

I'll make this statement: meta keywords is a signal. One of roughly a thousand we analyze.

Getting it right is a nice perk for us, but won't rock your world. Abusing meta keywords can hurt you.

We know Google currently does not use it but don't confuse it with the meta description tag which they do use.

That being said, will you spend the time manually or even programmatically adding in meta keywords into your pages, knowing Bing uses them and Google does not?

Bing: Social Factors More Important Than Linking Factors

Eric Enge has an excellent interview with Bing's Duane Forrester. There are many excellent take aways from this interview but the key is this:

• Bing says that social factors are more important that link factors for determining rankings. As Eric summarized, "The ranking of what priorities for publishers in Duane’s eyes. #1 Content #2 Social Media #3 Links. Links were rated as the third most important area. Third."
• Another major point, as Eric points out is that user interaction in the search results is looked at closely. He said, "The huge weight placed by Bing on user interaction with the search results as a ranking factor."
• Another point is that Bing is relying on RSS feeds more and more for finding new content.
• Bing has a very low threshold for bugs in Sitemaps files, in fact, he said, "1% allowance for dirt in a Sitemap," dirt such as links leading to 404 pages and so on.

Google Impression Counts Differently For Sitelinks

I spotted a very interesting tidbit I did not know myself on how Google calculates organic search impressions within webmaster tools.

A Google Webmaster Help thread has a Googler explaining that a search result with sitelinks is considered one impression which has two individual listings from the same domain is considered two impressions.

For example, a search for this site returns a main result with a few sitelinks. But this is not considered several organic impressions, it is only considered one impression:

But when you have two separate results, then Google will count them as two unique impressions:

Asaph from Google said:

You get one impression for each time a URL from your site shows up in the SERP with the caveat that sitelinks are not counted as separate impressions. For example for the query "panther" I get two wikipedia results, so wikipedia would see two impressions for that query.

In the example you gave about the NYT we would count only a single impression for the top level URL and no impressions for the sitelinks. If you clicked on either the top level page or one of the sitelinks, we would count that as one click for the top level page.
